Are you sticking to your promise?
At the start of 2015, your goal was to lose 5, 10 or 20kg in 2015.
You vowed that you would stick to it this time round.
Does this sound familiar?
During this time of the year most of us begin our normal routines. Back to long working hours, the kids are back at school (thank god) and the after school activities begin. Dropping off and picking up your child from their after school activities becomes time consuming. By now reality sets in, our holiday period is over. We soon realise we don’t have the time to commit to a 6-7 day per week training regime.
I can guarantee you that most people are finding it difficult to stick to their goals. People realise that they have launched into a program that is unsustainable.
So how do you lose the excess weight?
The solution is simple. For most people that are striving to achieve their goals, joining a gym or a boot camp seems to be the right move. You are motivated to achieve your goals and you have the best intentions to go to the gym/boot camp before or after work.
A few weeks later into the undertaking your new training regime, you become frustrated and inpatient with the lack of results. The next step is to resort to extreme measures by cutting calories giving you an instant drop in weight.
Will this plan work?
Sure it will but only in the short term.
Most of us know at least one person who has tried this approach. They may have achieved the body of their dreams but I can assure you that they would have reverted back to their initial weight plus some. This is where people fail to see through their resolutions. It becomes too hard to put so much effort for the little return on investment. We wait until next December and January to make another resolution and promise to stick to it..And the whole cycle begins again!
To avoid this vicious cycle and the disappointment in the lack of results, here are some tips to kick start your weight loss journey. Once the kilos fall off make sure you never find them again!
Find your ‘why.
Focus on losing body fat and not losing numbers on the scales.
Rather than a calorie restriction plan that leaves you tired and hungry focus on nourishing your body with delicious nutritious foods. This will give you a burst of energy to get through the day.
Focus on the right type of training that will guarantee fat loss. Train for fat loss not for fitness. Most cardio programs are targeted to improve fitness. Perform exercises that you are not good at to ensure fat loss is achieved.
Undertake a structured progressive overloading strength program. This will maintain or increase lean muscle tissue. About 66% your metabolism is influenced by the amount of muscle tissue you have. Muscle tissue is the only thing that burns calories, burns fat and carbohydrates.
There are no short cuts! You must commit and be consistent in any program you embark on.
