This is the time of year where most people dream about having the body of their dreams. They dream of losing 10, 15, 20kg, they dream of a small waistline, a flat belly, rocking arms, a great set of pins and a six pack to go with it.
There are lots of books, magazines, blogs and programs that provide individuals with information that can be overwhelming. This information is often misleading as they promote quick fixes and diet plans that are fit for people who choose to starve themselves silly.
Most people think that the only way to achieve the body shape they have always wanted is through a diet that promotes minimal food, replacement meal shakes and pills with no physical effort.
What happens when you starve yourself, take your pills and have your replacement shakes and achieve the body of your dreams? Will you be able to sustain it? Is it a regime that you are willing to follow for the rest of your life in order to keep the body you have always wanted?
I don’t think so. It doesn’t have to be a process where you torture yourself. You can still have the body you have always wanted by eating real food and by incorporating exercise into your busy week. It doesn’t have to take over your life. It doesn’t have to be difficult. It doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience.
What most people fail to understand is that quick fixes are not sustainable. As the name suggests, it’s a quick fix that is fixed for a short period of time. People also believe that the only way to get the body of their dreams is to knuckle down, restrict themselves from all the tasty foods that they enjoy and eat a sparrow food diet that promotes instant results.
I often hear ‘I’m gonna start Monday,’ ‘I’m gonna do this, ‘I’m gonna do that.’ Let me tell you, they are all ‘gonna’s’ and not ‘doers.’ In reality they have already failed before they have even started!
That’s exactly right… Why?
They don’t have a strong enough reason WHY they want to achieve the body of their dreams.
Is it because summer is nearly shining upon us? Is it because they are travelling overseas and want to look fantastic on the beach? Is it because they have a function that they will be attending in the next few weeks?
I will always remember a call on a Friday morning from a lady who wanted to train twice per day seven days a week.
I thought WOW! What is this lady training for? What is she preparing herself for? Yep, you guessed it. She wanted to trim down for her wedding day.
This was an excellent reason WHY she wanted to transform her body. Unfortunately, she wanted to start on the following Monday with the Sunday being her actual wedding day!
This is one of many but the most extreme and unrealistic result based goals requested by a person in my career. Just for the record, I did not take her on. I suggested that she should enjoy the wedding preparation and that if she was serious in changing the way she looked to come and see me after her honeymoon. To my surprise I never heard from her again.
With quick results in mind, fitness centres and personal trainers will sell you workouts to achieve results in a short period of time. Nutrition companies will advertise their magic pills and shakes that will make you lose the desired weight within two weeks or less making it appealing for the consumer to purchase because people want results now.
Some of these extreme methods will work in the short term but at the cost of leaving you rundown, sick, tired and making it impossible to sustain.
The effects of these quick fixes is that most of the time after completing a program, people will reward themselves with poor habits. A few weeks later they will be worse off than when they started. This is the reason why every year it becomes harder to attain and retain your results.
I’m not here to say that the industry is a rip off or misleading but unfortunately the consumer wants a quick fix! This mind set creates an opportunity for people to cash in on people’s emotional desires and confusion on the topic.
We see this in other industries too. Courses and qualifications that promote guaranteed jobs by the end of the course.
In my 17 years as a Body Transformation Specialist, how many times do you think I have heard a client ask ‘how long before I see results?’
For personal trainers, it is a difficult question to answer. A body transformation is a process. There are no short cuts or quick fixes to achieve great results. Most people don’t realise that many factors influence a person’s ability to achieve results. These factors include: age, ethnicity, nutrition level & history, exercise age & history, psychological perceptions about food, exercise, body composition and not to mention the state of their physiology (health) such as efficiency of insulin & carbohydrate and protein metabolism.
Yep, it’s not as easy as jumping on a treadmill, counting and cutting calories (calories in vs. calories out) or taking magic pills or shakes. There are a lot of factors that influence whether you will experience dramatic improvements.
But we all know people want results NOW!
I know there are many trainers out there that want to be able to give clients a clear, accurate time-frame for permanent and significant results.
People who embark on a transformation journey feel that by paying a fee and employing a trainer that results will automatically be achieved. Before you start any program there are two problems you should be aware of.
The first problem is that people are completely deluded about the state of their metabolism. The fact is that the state of an individual’s metabolism essentially determines the type and magnitude of the results they'll experience from a program.
The second thing you should be aware of is that personal trainers don't have a simple, rapid, accurate method to determine the state of someone’s metabolism. You need to make sure you know where your metabolism is at. Use this as a starting point. You need to know how to work with your metabolism in order to achieve success with your program. A well-planned out science based process will guarantee you to get the body of your dreams ensuring you are able to sustain it.
So next time you decide to embark on a body transformation challenge make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. Don’t waste your time, effort and money hoping for results to just fall into place. If so, you better be prepared for disappointment.
