Most people are confused and are often misled as to the type of training that is best suited to shape their body. I often here people wanting to lose x amount of kg’s within a short time constraint. They opt for 5-6 sessions per week with cardio workouts as the cornerstone of their program. They hit the pavement running, participate in at least 4 spin classes a week and they hit the stepper with an incline high enough to climb Mount Everest.
Another problem that many people face is the need to perform ‘endless hours’ on cardio workouts because the fitness industry has made individuals believe that doing more is better.
In order to burn body fat and to shape your body into a firm lean physique, the endless hours performing cardio will do more harm than good. Yes, you’ve read correctly. It will do more harm than good! Cardio training will make you lose precious time and muscle which is the key component to a lean is looking body.
So, what will you need to do in order to achieve a firm looking physique?
Stop performing endless hours of cardio!
Did you know?
That muscle is by far the most metabolically active tissue. Our muscles are a dynamic reservoir of protein that is constantly broken down to donate proteins that participate in every process that keeps us alive and functioning every day we're alive?
Our muscles also supply the essential fuel that powers all immune function and cell replication. Muscle is also the only tissue that metabolises stored energy (protein, carbohydrate and fat) into usable energy. Our muscles drive our metabolism.
As adults with every passing decade we lose the capacity to maintain muscle mass. In fact, the older we get, the easier it is to lose.
The average adult can expect to lose 10kgs of pure muscle and replace it with up to 20kgs of body fat. An ever-increasing amount of research suggests this process triggers accelerated aging!
On the other hand, building and maintaining our muscle mass appears to trigger all the responses that keep us young and vital. The fact is, as we age, we lose muscle mass easily and this underlines what makes us sick, old and fat!
I’m not saying that cardio should never be performed but the right type of cardio and the right amount of cardio needs to be considered.
